{"id":907,"date":"2016-02-01T22:28:08","date_gmt":"2016-02-02T02:28:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/annelitwin.com\/?p=907"},"modified":"2016-02-01T22:28:08","modified_gmt":"2016-02-02T02:28:08","slug":"melinda-gates-the-first-woman-of-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.annelitwin.com\/blog\/blog-posts\/melinda-gates-the-first-woman-of-women\/","title":{"rendered":"Melinda Gates: The First Woman of Women"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t<![CDATA[<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-908\" src=\"http:\/\/annelitwin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/melinda-gates-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"melinda gates\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.annelitwin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/melinda-gates-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.annelitwin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/melinda-gates.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>I found it inspiring to read in <em>Forbes<\/em> magazine that Melinda Gates, of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/carolinehoward\/2015\/11\/23\/the-first-woman-of-women-how-melinda-gates-became-the-worlds-most-powerful-advocate-for-women-and-girls\/#2715e4857a0b32f0ec10e940\">has decided to put women and girls at the center of her focus to end poverty in the world<\/a>. Other philanthropists and bankers (such as Muhammad Yunus, who won a Nobel Peace Prize for microloan practices that target women) have shown that investing in women results in significant improvement in the standard of living for families and communities.\nCaroline Howard writes in <em>Forbes<\/em> that Melinda Gates, who has $41.3 billion in foundation assets to invest, \u201chas become the most powerful person on the planet whose singular focus is women and girls.\u201d Gates explains that in looking for a woman who would champion issues of poverty for girls and women for the Gates Foundation, she eventually realized that she herself was the best person to do it. Her passion comes from knowing that\n\n\n<ul>\n\t\n\n<li>Women account for six out of ten of the world\u2019s poorest people.<\/li>\n\n\n\t\n\n<li>Women account for two-thirds of the illiterate population.<\/li>\n\n\n\t\n\n<li>58 percent of all primary school dropouts are girls. One year or more of primary school boosts a girl\u2019s future wages by 10\u201320 percent.<\/li>\n\n\n\t\n\n<li>The International Monetary Fund calculates that 3.9 million women and girls are \u201cmissing\u201d annually: about two-fifths are never born; one-sixth die in early childhood; more than one-third die during their reproductive years.<\/li>\n\n\n\t\n\n<li>289,000 women died during pregnancy and childbirth in 2013.<\/li>\n\n\n\t\n\n<li>Closing the employment and wage gap between men and women would increase women\u2019s income by $17 trillion globally.<\/li>\n\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\nGates sponsors a range of initiatives to alleviate poverty for women and girls that are all connected, such as\n\n\n<ul>\n\t\n\n<li>Family planning<\/li>\n\n\n\t\n\n<li>Maternal and prenatal health<\/li>\n\n\n\t\n\n<li>Infant health<\/li>\n\n\n\t\n\n<li>Education<\/li>\n\n\n\t\n\n<li>Microentrepreneurship<\/li>\n\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\nWhat can you do? The Gates Foundation is well funded, but there are many smaller foundations that are focused on alleviating poverty for girls and women in the developing world. These foundations need donations and volunteers to support their work. My favorite foundation is VGIF (Virginia Gildersleeve International Fund), and I encourage you to go to the Fund\u2019s website and read about its work at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vgif.org\">www.vgif.org<\/a>.
