Yet carrying these internalized stereotypes can influence our behaviors toward other women. For that reason, it is important to begin to notice how these negative stereotypes may live in us and be reflected in our thoughts, attitudes, and behaviors.\n1. The level I statements below describe ways you may be hurting yourself by internalizing negative stereotypes, and the Level II statements describe ways you may be participating in horizontal violence toward another woman.\nBe honest with yourself and put a check mark by the statements below that are true for you. Notice whether your score indicates a low, moderate, or strong internalization of negative stereotypes about women.\nLevel I\u2014Have you ever\n\n\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n\t\n\n<li>Discounted or doubted yourself?<\/li>\n\n\n\t\n\n<li>Apologized before presenting your ideas in a group or meeting, such as saying, \u201cI may be wrong\u201d or \u201cThis is probably a stupid question\u201d?<\/li>\n\n\n\t\n\n<li>Felt like an imposter or fraud when you got a promotion or opportunity?<\/li>\n\n\n\t\n\n<li>Looked in the mirror and really disliked what you saw?<\/li>\n\n\n\t\n\n<li>Tied your self-image to your appearance or clothes?<\/li>\n\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\nLevel II\u2014Have you ever\n\n\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n\t\n\n<li>Said something negative about another woman and denied it when she asked?<\/li>\n\n\n\t\n\n<li>Talked negatively about a woman behind her back and smiled to her face?<\/li>\n\n\n\t\n\n<li>Made a commitment to support another woman and didn\u2019t do it when the time came?<\/li>\n\n\n\t\n\n<li>Said to someone, \u201cShe\u2019s such a bitch\u201d?<\/li>\n\n\n\t\n\n<li>Made fun of another woman\u2019s appearance behind her back?<\/li>\n\n\n\t\n\n<li>Said or thought, \u201cYou can\u2019t trust women\u201d?<\/li>\n\n\n\t\n\n<li>Spread a rumor that you had heard that cast doubt on another woman\u2019s competence?<\/li>\n\n\n\t\n\n<li>Seen another woman\u2019s ideas attacked or ignored in a meeting, whether you agreed with them or not, while you sat back and watched in silence?<\/li>\n\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\nUse the following scoring guide to reflect upon your answers:\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">1\u20133 checks = You exhibit low internalization of negative stereotypes about women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">4\u20136 checks = You exhibit moderate internalization of negative stereotypes about women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">7+ checks = You exhibit strong internalization of negative stereotypes about women.<\/p>\n\n\n2. Think about your vision for how you would like women to behave toward each other at work. Create a personal code of conduct for how you want to behave.
