The parallel concept in the adolescent-girl literature is “social aggression,” where the intention is to undermine a girl’s credibility and reputation with others. Half the women interviewed for this research reported experiencing career aggression from a woman at work, sometimes by a woman they knew and sometimes by someone they weren’t acquainted with at all.
Before I share examples of career aggression, I want to acknowledge my concerns as a feminist about reinforcing the worst negative stereotypes about women. Let me reiterate that women can and do have solid, stable, and supportive relationships with other women colleagues, which was often stressed by the women in this research. It is also true that men sabotage each other’s careers. The significance here for women is that in the midst of all the challenges we encounter in organizations because of gender biases and other structural problems previously discussed, we add to the headwinds we face and participate in our own oppression by undermining each other when the opposite behavior is needed to change our situation. Only by acknowledging this problem can we begin to understand and change our behavior so that we can trust each other and work together to change our organizations for the good of all.

Characteristics of indirect and career aggression

Indirect aggression

Career Aggression

• Consists of purposefully hurtful behaviors that are denied when the aggressor is confronted
• Includes verbal and nonverbal covert behaviors, including
– Eye-rolling
––Subtle comments, such as “I see you didn’t take your smart pill today.”
– Silence as a weapon
– Spreading negative rumors

• Includes indirect behaviors but moves beyond them to actions intended to damage or sabotage the career of another woman
• May be perpetrated by a friend, an acquaintance, or a complete stranger in the workplace

An excerpt from my book, New Rules for Women, available at Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/dp/0982056982/).

[3,4
82,116,225,550,551,612,634
post-709","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-blog-posts","category-excerpt","tag-career-aggression","tag-competition","tag-gender","tag-stere","tag-stereotypes","tag-women","tag-workplace
["GET
