{"id":564,"date":"2014-12-18T09:00:20","date_gmt":"2014-12-18T13:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/annelitwin.com\/?p=564"},"modified":"2014-12-18T09:00:20","modified_gmt":"2014-12-18T13:00:20","slug":"there-are-limited-spaces-at-the-top","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.annelitwin.com\/blog\/blog-posts\/there-are-limited-spaces-at-the-top\/","title":{"rendered":"There Are Limited Spaces at the Top"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t<![CDATA[One of the research participants, Cherry, a technology manager, explained\u00a0why she does not think that men need support to advance in the same\u00a0way that women need support: \u201cThere are a lot more spaces for men than\u00a0there are for women.\u201d In other words, men just have more opportunity\u00a0to advance. Because the number of jobs for women at the top is so low\u00a0and the percentage of women in senior management has been stagnant\u00a0for so long\u2014at least the last ten years\u2014it is easy to understand how\u00a0women may see each other as competitors for the limited number of\u00a0positions available. Laurie, a white manager in her forties in the travel\u00a0industry, explained her viewpoint in this way:\n\n\n<blockquote>You see the successful women as your competition. You don\u2019t\u00a0really see the whole pie or all the people out there as your\u00a0competition. I think it\u2019s easier to compete one on one with a\u00a0woman than with a man.<\/blockquote>\n\n\nScholars have described the mind-set reflected by Cherry and\u00a0Laurie as \u201ca dearth mentality,\u201d or the feeling that there is not enough\u00a0to go around. This mind-set could explain why we can sometimes feel\u00a0that other women are our competition. Marissa, a white government\u00a0supervisor in her fifties, explained:\n\n\n<blockquote>Very sadly, I see it a lot in the upper levels of government\u00a0that women try to do each other in. Women, when they are\u00a0promoted, will tend to be appointed at the lower end of the\u00a0salary scale for their position, while the men almost always come\u00a0in at the top of the scale. Women will try to do each other in at\u00a0that upper level if another woman starts at a higher salary than\u00a0they did.
