Many organizations talk about valuing teamwork, but very few of them have team-based reward systems. In situations where women are in the minority, women often say that they have trouble getting their ideas heard by their male colleagues in team meetings and that often male colleagues will repeat what a woman has just said and get credit for the idea. In a situation where there are only two women on a team, it seems likely that the need for loyalty and support from the only other woman colleague increases when it feels difficult to be heard—yet as women, we have to play by the men’s rules to be promoted. It is easy to see that if one woman colleague in this type of setting has an idea that is in conflict with the other woman colleague’s, or if playing by the men’s rules means that the loyalty expectation is betrayed, it can feel like a personal betrayal.
When you add to this a lack of skill in dealing with conflict with another woman, the possibility of damage to the relationship is high. In this way, women’s unspoken friendship rules and feminine workplace values—expecting loyalty and valuing collaboration—crash into the workplace context that requires disagreement and individual heroics. The possibility increases that women colleagues will feel disappointed or betrayed by another woman on the team and feel that trust is damaged. The problem is that they probably don’t recognize that their friendship rules in the context of the “man’s world” of the workplace are setting them up to be disappointed. They probably see their conflict as an interpersonal problem that is only about them as individuals. We will take a look at what to do to prevent this common situation later.

An excerpt from my book, New Rules for Women, available at Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/dp/0982056982/).

[3,4
116,612,634
post-496","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-blog-posts","category-excerpt","tag-competition","tag-women","tag-workplace
["GET
